Stephen Lyons on Fond of Tigers' new record

We asked Stephen Lyons to give us a hint of what we'll hear at AN EVENING WITH FOND OF TIGERS AT CLUB PUSH (FOX CABARET: THURS. JAN. 28), where the band will be playing songs from their new record.

"It has the first instance of acoustic guitar on any Tigers record (though only about 22 seconds of acoustic, and certainly not in an intro.)

There's also a pedal steel on one song.

Between the singing (on parts of two songs), 22 seconds of acoustic guitar, some pedal steel, and even a few sections in 4/4, it could be assumed that we've gone country and western. Rest assured, we haven't (at least, not much more so than before).

And the drummers are both using big kits on this one."

WE HEAR THAT SOME SONGS INCORPORATE AS MANY AS 90 TRACKS

"Our first record involved no overdubs, no headphones, and I actually broke a string and switched guitars mid-song. It was a good take. The second and third albums had increasingly more overdubs, but still very few, when compared to the typical recording these days.

With a band of this size, a lot of tracks get eaten up. Two drummers will eat up some tracks. My guitar was bi-amped, DI-ed (as a fail safe) and (isolation) room-miked, so there's four channels of guitar per part, and I did way more guitar overdubs on this record than on previous albums (which, admittedly, isn't saying much).

We also did some layering of trumpet and violin that take some of the parts to a whole other weird level. Chordal stuff on shots.

There's also a short section of one song where I created a small percussion ensemble for about 45 seconds, as a nod to outdoor music festivals everywhere. That took up a few channels ... and was pretty fun."
